I along with Mr. Kapil Kumar Gupta have recently visited XYZ library for data conversion and implementation of Koha and DSpace. We have successfully migrated their old data and implemented the Koha (version 16.05) and DSpace (version 5.5). We have installed everything live but i was badly stuck on internet connectivity issue at the time of installing the package from terminal command because of proxy settings. I could able to set proxy in a browser but even though terminal command was not working like “apt-get update” etc. I could able to search the solution for internet connectivity from terminal command which is explained below after which there was no issue in running the commands for downloading and installing the packages from internet.
Proxy setting for Internet access via terminal
Open the /etc/environment file with nano/gedit/vi command and paste the following lines:
User_name = is your username given by institute to access the internet
password = is password against the username to access the internet
During installation of DSpace everything went correct and smoothly but at the time of running the command “mvn maven” system again deny the downloading of packages/files, which again encouraged us to find the solution and we got the following:
Proxy setting in maven
Find the settings.xml file in maven installation directory and uncomment the proxies section and add your proxy server details and access credentials.
Proxy setting for Ant

Today i attended Video conference on National digital library project by IIT Kharagpur. I observed the main focus of the entire project was to collect the METADATA from various sources including commercial publishers/aggregators like IEEE. I remember during trial access for some discovery tool like ebsco, ProQuest etc. concern vendors were asking for all Metadata of Catalogue, Institutional repositories and the list/detail of materials subscribed so that they can put into their server and we can search (Metadata) with more speed all in a single point but will get access to full text if we have subscribed the resources.
So our NDL seems to be discovery service which will provide Metadata searching of various type of materials and referring to original source with no guarantee to access in full text just like searching on Google. A Nice document of discovery tool i found here for your ready reference. I personally feel our NDL project should focus on those resources which is available in Open Access like thesis in Sodhganga, National digital library, ETD/IR at NITRKL etc. because Digital library demands single point solution of full text rather than referral service.
Therefore i would like to summarize that it is very good Project but should focus on full text single point solutions used by highly qualified scholars as well as a common man living in a remote village else i have doubt on Return on Investment (ROI)? As far as training is concern it will be good if NDL people will personally visit the site and implement the DSpace because i have bitter experience that in only 2 days of training professionals could able to implement DSpace.

I am very much confused about the National digital library project
(NDL) at IIT Kharagpur and Sodhganga of Inflibnet. Main reason is i
came to know NDL is going to collect the Metadata from DSpace/Eprint
repositories of various IITs, NITs etc. and provide a common platform
to search all repositories.
My confusions are:
1. How metadata searching can be considered as Digital library without
2. Is it a Kind of Union catalogue of Digital repositories?
3. Sodhganga is nicely managed by Inflibnet under the directorship of
Dr. Arora than why this type of things was not integrated with the
same which is of national importance?
4. What will be the other contents since its a huge project involving
crores of rupees?
5. Recently INDEST and Inflibnet consortium has been merged so is
there any chance of merging Sodhganga and NDL in future if yes than
why not today?
6. One Koha project under NMEICT was started having cost around 1.8
crore but final out put i do not know just seen Union catalogue of
some libraries and Inflibnet is also doing same work now by collecting
records from various libraries?
Kindly clarify me if anybody is having clear ideas and differences
among them. I shall be highly thankful for the same.

I have attended workshop on Koha and DSpace at IGKV (Indra Gandhi Krishi Vishwa vidyalaya) from 12-13 December, 2015 as resource person along with my friend Mr. D.P. Tripathi. It was a second time opportunity given to us by Dr. Madhav Pandey, Librarian, IGKV for which we are very thankful to him and obliged for creating such a platform where we can share our knowledge for the benefit of libraries and library professionals. This time again we found that many enthusiastic participants brought their PC for installations of koha so that they can use the same directly at their institutes without any problem so we appreciate their commitment for implementation of Koha without further delay. During these two days we found that many are interested to learn and implement these tools and technology in their libraries but unfortunately they are not getting platforms where they can learn the skills. Therefore its my humble request to all eminent library professionals please create such platforms and invite resource persons as per your convenience and participate in knowledge building procedure for the betterment of library profession and professionals.

It was nice experience to share my thoughts at JILA conference, Ranchi. The topic was “Re-engineering Public Library and Academic Library Systems in India” many papers were presented with suggestions and how to improve the existing systems. Many issues were raised to Re-engineering the existing libraries like finance, laws etc. My view and some solutions was to adopt the open source/free solutions like Koha, DSpace, eprint, joomla, zotero, etc. as well as open access resources like open access journals/books etc. to overcome some of the problems without investing much amount on that, but i felt that awareness and training on the above cost effective /free solutions is major challenge. So the LIS departments must train the students about these resources during their course of study and assign some small projects on these free solutions. The good libraries and library professionals must share their expertise among the nearby libraries and provide a platform to educate the others for successful implementations of these technologies.

First of all i wish a very happy Librarians day to all. Today i formally announce my small contribution for helping people who need some help in implementation of open source software and conducting workshop on that but could not do due to some financial constraints. I would like to offer my services maximum 3/4 times in a year WITHOUT charging any Traveling/food/honorarium (accommodation i expect) expenses to nearby regions (maximum for two days, Saturday and Sunday) for implementation/conducting workshops on Open source software like Koha, DSpace, Joomla, Newgenlib etc.
Further, anybody can come to my home during Saturday and Sunday to share my experience with them on the above tools with prior discussions, i hope my family will allow me and manage your free boarding and lodging at my small home at NIT Rourkela.

I participated as resource person at IIT Roorkee in National workshop on Koha, DSpace and Joomla from 2-6 February, 2015. Everything went well and i have tried my level best to explain working of all above software’s unfortunately DSpace could not be installed due to fast and smooth Internet connectivity issues, therefore i recommend the resource persons to use Live DVD for DSpace installation during workshops and provide demo of actual installation methods, however if there is high speed LAN based internet connection than you can try direct installation method.
